Kanye Meets Angola on the Dancefloor

Via Benjamin Lebrave's Lungu Lungu column over at Fader Mag: I’ve been neck deep into Angolan house. I recently discovered a never ending thread of good afro-house coming from Angola on Soundcloud. So I quickly put my rusty Portuguese to use and connected with...

Pidgen Rap with the FOKN Bois: Broken Language

Claaaaassic choon already, with a brand new beat composed by DJ Juls (still no decent links for him). You can grab the entire mixtape here, but start with a quick listen of this song Broken Language... sounds like the FOKN Bois' decleration of all things pidgin!...

Killamu – Flaminguinho free download

killamufinal500

You may remember Killamu’s remix of Tiramakossa on our Akwaaba Sem Transporte kuduro compilation. His full album A Minha Face comes out very soon, starting with an iTunes exclusive January 12, 2010. We couldn’t resist to give you a free preview of one of his bangin’ kuduro beats. It was hard to pick one, the album features a handful of instrumental kuduro beats, as well as “regular” songs with some of Luanda’s finest lyricists. And even a couple kizomba tracks!

We look forward to unveiling the entire album, but in the meantime, we hope you dig Flaminguinho, a nice ingredient to blend into your mixes, o DJ friends. Blast it, pass it, slice it, dice it, and if you have a mix send it over, we can feature it here in our podcast. Feedback is always appreciated as well!

Refugee All Stars (Sierra Leone)

New track from Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars available via Cumbancha, download it here for free.

So who are the Refugee All Stars? From refugeeallstars.org:

The film ‘Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars’ tells the remarkable and uplifting story of a group of six Sierra Leonean musicians who came together to form a band while living as refugees in the Republic of Guinea. A brutal civil war (1991-2002) forced them from their homes in Sierra Leone. Many of their family and friends were murdered in the violence, leaving them with physical and emotional scars that may never heal. Despite the unimaginable horrors of civil war, they were saved through their music. Through music they find a place of refuge, a sense of purpose and a source of power. The film follows the band over the course of three years as they make the difficult decision to return to their war-torn country and realize their dream of recording an album of their original music.

Vieux Farka Touré vs Sabbo

For those who forgot… Vieux Farka Touré, despite his name (vieux = old in French) is not Ali Farka Touré ancestor, but his own SON!! He’s been on the road pushing his dad’s legacy worldwide, and even counts Ahmed Fofana as one of his musicians, often his small orchestra’s conductor actually. On this one he gets the electro treatment courtesy of Sabbo, our favorite kuduro inspired Israeli producer, who’s already done damage with the Ze Bula remixes. This one being the track Fondo, coming out on Six Degrees. Read about it here or download the remix directly:

Le Hogon in Bamako

Here’s an interesting article about Le Hogon, one of Bamako, Mali’s prime spots for live music. We heard Toumani Diabaté perform there in April 2008, and… are eager to return asap. Except we were told it closed down, any tips on other good music venues in Bamako?
