OUR 2016 ARTISTS…

Wrapping up another eventful year here at Akwaaba Music! We were glad to release into the world the exciting new albums of Senegalese beatmaker Ibaaku, Ghana-Burkina collaborative duo Mabiisi, Portuguese producer Rocky Marsiano and Ghanaian seperewa player Osei Korankye.

…GOT LOVE FROM THE PRESS…

Mabiisi was nominated for “Best Duo In Traditional African Music” at the African Music Awards and was the subject of an in-depth Afropop radio program. Their eponymous debut album also got noticed on Consequence of Sound, Fader and Music In Africa.

Ibaaku‘s album received attention from French radio RFI, as well as influential webzines FaderOkayafrica and Nataal. After the digital launch of “Alien Cartoon” in January, the album met with such success in France that it got a brand new physical release in partnership with La Baleine in December, and Ibaaku is now represented by Scènégal Ethic, Ginger Sounds and DuNose

Osei Korankye‘s album got glowing reviews from Afropop’s Banning Eyre and Music In Africa.

…AND GAVE LOVE TO THE CROWDS!

Ibaaku performed at the mighty festivals Transmusicales (France), Visa For Music (Morocco) and Nyege Nyege (Uganda). Mabiisi embarked on their first European tour, rocking the stages at Recyclart, Le Sucre and at Festival Clandestino in Sweden, while Rocky Marsiano blew some minds at Festival Med in Portugal.

Stay tuned for more exciting sounds, 2017 looks and sounds promising!

(Français) Compte-rendu du Chale Wote Festival 2016 !

[:fr]

afrogallonism-cw-5afrogallonism-cw-2

You are not forced to do anything, you are forced to do you …you come with your purest form of art).”

See you next year Chale !

SURAJ – Tribute To The East Exclusive Mix

SURAJ – Tribute To The East Exclusive Mix

I finally made it to Nairobi last August, and among many other eye openers, I was blown away when I realized afrohouse is already a pillar of Nairobi’s nightlife. The Angolan and Mozambican scenes have inundated Soundcloud with countless bangers, not to mention South Africa, which is by most standards the global epicenter of house music. I was less aware of Nairobi’s house music output, but was very impressed by the quality of the DJs. One DJ who stood out in particular is SURAJ: this guy took me on a musical journey for the first time in way too long. I witnessed SURAJ behind the decks on several occasions, and truly appreciated his range, cleverly adapting his style to the time and venue without ever letting go of his distinct personality.

Fiending for more, I asked SURAJ to prepare an exclusive mix for us, which he describes this way:

“This mix for Akwaaba gives me the opportunity to create a set that reflects a night out in Nairobi and the music that comes along with it. I am a DJ and producer based in Nairobi, Kenya, I create contemporary electronic music infused with traditional musical and cultural elements. In this mix, I highlight my signature sound alongside new music from some of my favorite labels and artists from around the world. I’ve featured among others Denivel Line, Pablo Fierro & Zepherin Saint.
