New Video: M3NSA – SDI feat. Amaarae

After a long break from his solo projects, M3NSA (FOKN Bois, RedRed) is back again! Setting it off with ‘SDI’ featuring Amaarae… This one is for cruising!

Driving through countryside Central Europe with co – producer Andras Weil in his classic 1950’s convertible, hanging out and riding Huffy bikes, whilst capturing the palettes of suburban Accra

The video shows a very colorful, confident and relaxed M3NSA. A play on how vibrant and comfortable he remains within all his creative output .

Amaarae does her fair share of swagging up the video with her Shaolin poses, ballet pirouettes and  wobbly bicycle riding, along with Akpene Hoggar, the now Miss Universe Ghana and her passenger. She DEFINITELY won because she featured in this video *wink wink*

“Still Dey Inside”, M3NSA assures us he refuses to get caught up in the pressures of expectations, just doing things properly at his own pace whilst maintaining some balance.

He also addresses the ‘hate-pocritical’ naysayers and worried observers. Amaarae complements the production with her New Wave-y Afro Soul flex. Sharp lyrics that certify her as both an emcee and singer/ songwriter.

This video is styled by Simpol Tinz,  shot by photographer/ filmmaker and poet Fotombo (Mutombo Da Poet) in North Kaneshie – Accra and by photographer and DJ Bandi in Hungary. Edited by Kubolor Cini and ‘crayoned’ by Tawan Bazemore.

Rophnan: My Generation Concert & Major Lazer Mixtape

Rophnan: My Generation Concert & Major Lazer Mixtape

On August 25, Rophnan officially released his album in Addis Abeba. The My Generation concert was a major event attended by thousands – with a queue twice as long outside! The event was much more than a release party, it was the culmination of weeks of sky rocketing buzz around Rophnan, who’s come to embody the hopes of his generation.

Let’s rewind: last February, Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn resigned unexpectedly, in the midst of massive protests across the country. His successor Abiy Ahmed was appointed in April, and since then a wave of hope has been sweeping across the country. Rophnan’s album and EP came out exactly at this time, and has incarnated the aspirations of his generation. The political context, combined with the very nature of the music, pioneering the junction of EDM with Ethiopian instruments and traditions, have propelled Rophnan into exponential growth.

Rophnan has become a symbol, not just for the club scene which he emerged from: his hype has gained the critical mass to push him onto the mainstream stage. His manager points out countless symptoms of this incredible growth: the number of booking requests, which now come in at half a dozen per day – most of which are turned down; Rophnan’s performance in front of 13,000 people on Mezkal Square, or more anecdotally cars blasting Rophnan’s songs even in remote villages.

It’s no surprise to see this music revolution spilling beyond Ethiopia’s borders: Rophnan’s song Get to Work is featured on Major Lazer’s recent Afrobeats mixtape, one of the very few underground songs within a line up of usual suspects: Davido, Tekno, Maphorisa etc – stream it here.

Jowaa: Asokpor Corner @ Chale Wote

[:en]

After rocking European stages from Fusion to Lisbon, Jowaa is spearheading the Asokpor Corner at Accra’s Chale Wote Street Art Festival. Chale Wote, now in its eighth year, is one the largest and most influential events happening in Ghana. It will be ridiculously fun to have Jowaa and guests rock the Old Kindsway Building from 4 til 10pm both Saturday and Sunday August 25-26. Here’s the lowdown:

IFKR (Ghana): DJ K3V and Eff the DJ are long time Akwaaba friends and collaborators. After years DJing, it’s great to see them work together on IFKR, releasing tracks and giving us their worthy take at the crossroads of afropop and EDM.

Qumasiquamé (Germany): another captivating Berlin head exploring the intersection of electronic beats and African rhythms. With two decades of DJing under his belt, expect a tightly woven set capturing the various phases and gems amassed throughout the years, as he does in this fantastic set for Boiler Room.

Afrolektra (Ghana): This Accra based producer has been releasing a slew of dance music remixes of current afropop hits, steadily pushing to bridge the gap between EDM and afrobeats. We can expect some unreleased material to be unveiled over the weekend.

Lukas Walters (Germany): free from musical boundaries, we can expect Lukas to give us his exploration of the world of grooves and bass driven music, blending influences from Berlin to Lisbon, from Africa to Brazil and the Caribbean and back to Europe via Detroit, Chicago and London. Check out his Boiler Room set.

DJ Mark (Ghana): a familiar name in many of Accra’s most popular pubs, Mark is one of the DJs pushing the coastal asokpor sound gig after gig all across town.

DJ Future (Ghana): another DJ who’s played sat countless venues in Accra. He brings his dancefloor expertise and passion for asokpor, so don’t expect your feet to stay still.

Max Le Daron – Monin Guetin

Max Le Daron – Monin Guetin

Max is no novice jumping on the afro-fusion train armed with jollof war memes. This first EP of the Unless Tomorrow trilogy clearly shows a precisely prepared musical puzzle, conceived over numerous trips, countless studio sessions, and genuine rapport with the artists he features.

“When I speak to you, your eyes turn red” – the chorus of Monin’ Guetin sets the tone for the darkest of Max Le Daron’s 3 EP opus. Burkinabè MC Joey Le Soldat refers to an ancient proverb which in essence says that the truth disturbs. Bars are spitted to disturb, genres and countries are blurred to disturb, sounds are fused together to fit equally well in a dark warehouse or a hypnotic, hot and dusty cypher. This 5 track EP is a first glimpse into Max Le Daron’s musical obsessions.
