Alex Wondergem

Don’t Hang Up unites three forces of Accra’s hip hop underground. Alex Wondergem has been making beats for a myriad of lyricists. In particular, we worked with him and Eli A Freee on Buying Our Freedom in 2017.

More recently he has been dropping bars, working on his solo hip hop project, while still producing for artists, in particular Tinuke. “I’ve been working with Tinuke since 2016, she’s one of the fiercest lyricists in town right now”.

The Kay-Ara connection also goes back a few years; initially, the “Accra underground lyrical legend” reached out to Alex to encourage and guide him, following the release of Buying Our Freedom.

Alex has been dropping monthly beat tapes, which Kay-Ara picked up, and the two finally decided to take things to the studio. “Kay-Ara came pre-loaded with tons of lyrics; I invited Tinuke who wrote her verses on the spot. We have good chemistry as MCs, and a similar understanding of hip hop. We are an odd clique that works: we are diverse and free characters, but we found a middle ground to create a fun and fluid project.”

Don’t Hang Up is taken from the trio’s upcoming EP, Some Corner For Dzorwulu, which drops October 31.
