Lungu Lungu: Wanlov Tells the FOKN DunaQuest Story
A few minutes with Wanlov the Kubolor, half of the FOKN Bois. He and M3nsa connected with the Irie Maffia in Budapest, giving birth to some infectious, futuristic Afropop. Akwaaba, chaleh, welcome 2 d future.
Apparently the end of the world has been either canceled or delayed. The reason is pretty clear to me: FOKN Bois just released their latest album, The FOKN DunaQuest in Budapest, and it needs a bit of space before we can all proceed with the end of times. Surely it will happen—on Ghana time.
The FOKN Bois, aka Wanlov the Kubolor and M3nsa, are not your average Ghanaian rappers. They reside far from the shady world of payola and corporate sponsorships that seriously limits the recognition of creative artists in Ghana. The Bois are closer to the streets, as exemplified in their amazingly fresh Coz Ov Moni pidgin English musical. They’re no payola policy means they’re not the most played artists on Ghana’s radio stations. However, after spending about 5 seconds on the streets of Accra with Wanlov, it’s pretty clear he is incredibly popular, a genuine artist recognized by people from all walks of life.
But forget Ghana for a second. Their latest collaboration with Hungary’s Irie Maffia can hardly be pigeon-holed as “Ghana music”—whatever that may mean, anyway. Instead of paraphrasing the story of how the album came to be, I’ll let Wanlov tell it. Check the video, below, to find out how these dudes ended up in Budapest, and better understand the double meaning of lungu lungu, a phrase that alludes to zigzagging through back streets, and also, corruption.
Here's your latest dose of afrohouse fire, delivered by Seres Produções label boss, producer and DJ Satelite. Did you catch Vol. 11, 12, 13 or the earlier 1, 2 and 3? Tracklist: 1 - DJ Vitoto feat. Koki Riba - Savanna Skies (Original Mix)2 - Jackie Queens, VeneiGrette...
GuiltyBeatz & Mr Eazi & Patapaa & Pappy Kojo - Akwaaba(Means WELCOME In TWI): This magnificent song is currently making the headlines in the music airwaves in both Ghana and Nigeria with two of the artist(Pappy Kojo & Patapaa) from Ghana and Mr. Eazi...
Attention all Rocky Marsiano fans: here's a growing collection of what we might have once called B-sides and lost tapes, for your listening pleasure. In Rocky's own words: "This is a collection of edits, tributes and reworks I have been making during the past few...

FOKN Bois meet Irie Maffia: The FOKN DunaQuest in Budapest
After running around Accra because of money, the FOKN Bois left for Budapest, hungry on a quest to find the finest duna (arse). They were kidnapped by the infamous Irie Maffia, a notorious band of musicians, singers, songwriters, deejays, producers, rappers…and fed only palinka and bread in a hot studio in the nippy Buda hills close to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s home.
In 5 days they were forced to do 4 gigs and record 8 tracks… It was sleepless hell… They managed to escape when the producer, Elo Marton, who was trying to water board more lyrics out of the exhausted FOKN Bois at a Turkish bath, absentmindedly gazed at singer/songwriter Sena’s duna as she sauntered by distractingly.
Now the tracks are out and sound so good that the FOKN Bois have forgiven Irie Maffia for the conditions by which this beautiful record came together. In their words: “We see demma Maffia side, but now everything be Irie.”
The FOKN Dunaquest in Budapest is a sonic Hiphop/Dance/Afropop adventure from Budapest to Bucharest, Brenham to Boston and Bolgatanga to Bubuashie! Eastern Europe meets West Africa…apio meets palinka. Ha!!!

Results are in! And this time we waste no time, EP is available for download right here, and shortly available at all major music stores. First let’s talk about Azingele… In 2010 Ruff-N-Smooth took Ghana by storm with a string of hits, the last of which was Azingele in late 2010. The song talks about… don’t hold your breath: girls. Although the duo boasts a decidedly modern, fairly consumerist style, they lament over the materialistic turn that relationships seem to be

Although the duo boasts a decidedly modern, fairly consumerist style, they lament over the materialistic turn that relationships seem to be taking in Ghana. Joined on the track by Ghana’s number one Francophone flavor dispenser, SK Blinks, we’ve been fortunate to give the acapella a spin with an army of producers from all over the world. More importantly, this time, we are truly amazed with the musical diversity of these remixes. About the remixers:
1 – Chuck Wild (US): New-York based Charlie B Wilder has been spreading his take on music in the city’s clubs (Bembe, Cielo) and airwaves (WNYU), but also via his great blog mixtaperiot.com. A few months spent in West Africa back in 2002 got him hooked onto African music, since then he’s remixed Vieux Farka Touré and is about to release a song with Congolese singer Fredy Massamba.
2 – Pushking Noize & Tillup (Switzerland): we discovered them through their work with artists in Mozambique such as Dama do Bling, then learned about their Tropical Disco parties in Zurich. When we heard this simple moombahton banger, we had to add it…!
3 – Granada! & Madmoa (Portugal): remember Diamond Bass? Luckily he hooked his friend Granada! onto this. A natural fit with Angolan-descendant Madmoa, who’s sound is clearly close to kuduro and the like. These boys really switched the song around. We like!
4 – Daniel Klauser (Chile): this kid’s been blowing up online in the past few months, dropping remixes all over the place, and most recently releasing an EP for DBTY. Daniel feels a special connection to African rhythms, which he thinks are part of South American culture. We’re so glad he feels that way, his sound is simply addictive.
5 – Chicus (US): this Brooklynite’s been spinnng records for years now, but we know him as head honcho of vinyl imprint Redbud Recordings, neck deep into dub and roots reggae. His other label Dither Down has put out great 12” and tropical remixes, and now Chicus hits us again, proving his love of hybrid sounds from yet another angle, inspired by the crossover appeal of Azingele’s vocals.
6 – LATA (Chile): probably the most abstract cut on this EP, this remix showcases LATA’s experimental sound, at the junction of dub, electronica and latin music, which, more broadly, reflects LATA’s quest to help define cultural identity in modern Chile.
