Os Mais Potentes “Yoyó” on latest Fader Mag 7″

Friday, April 9th, 2010

In the Fader’s own words:

“The 12th installment of the FADER/Southern Comfort 7-inch series is an upbeat one, with MNDR’s electronic fizz pop and loud and grimy kuduro straight from Angola’s Os Mais Potentes. We’ve been a fan of MNDR’s hyper energy for a long time and have long loved the releases on Akwaaba Music, so to pair two exclusive tracks from the realest dance music makers from New York and Africa, respectively, together on one 7-inch is a pretty exciting and special thing. We’ve also got some wild Egyptian-inspired artwork by Keren Richter on the cover.”

You can download both tracks for free on the Fader’s website. And if you want a copy of the vinyl, leave a comment on their page!

DJ Zhao – Ngoma 3

Monday, December 21st, 2009

BBRAVE  met DJ Zhao during his stay in Berlin last October. The two didn’t get to play together, but did exchange thoughts about African flavored club music -  and tunes! Zhao’s a cool cat, well versed in all strains of syncopated funk, from UK Funky to logobi and back.

Here’s a sample of what DJ Zhao lays down during his Ngoma parties.

Killamu – Flaminguinho free download

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

killamufinal500

You may remember Killamu’s remix of Tiramakossa on our Akwaaba Sem Transporte kuduro compilation. His full album A Minha Face comes out very soon, starting with an iTunes exclusive January 12, 2010. We couldn’t resist to give you a free preview of one of his bangin’ kuduro beats. It was hard to pick one, the album features a handful of instrumental kuduro beats, as well as “regular” songs with some of Luanda’s finest lyricists. And even a couple kizomba tracks!

We look forward to unveiling the entire album, but in the meantime, we hope you dig Flaminguinho, a nice ingredient to blend into your mixes, o DJ friends. Blast it, pass it, slice it, dice it, and if you have a mix send it over, we can feature it here in our podcast. Feedback is always appreciated as well!

Sinden w/ Haaksman on Kiss FM, plays Killamu

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

We recently got in touch with Graeme Sinden, DJ and host on London’s Kiss FM, who just did a show with Daniel Haaksman of Man Recordings. The show featured a lot of Man’s new stuff, in particular the Ku-Bo EP stuff (Ku-Bo is none other than Stefan Mörth, aka Stereotyp). But ALSO, and this is where you might start to feel your ears tickle, some tracks off of Killamu’s album A Minha Face, which drops right here on Akwaaba January 12. Now luckily, the Dirty Friends blog posted the entire show, which you can download there or directly here.

Galliano & kuduro

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Awesome, AWESOME mix of early (earlier?) kuduro, by Galliano, the first western dood we knew to push kuduro back in 2005 – 2006. If you read French, this interview is very interesting, it’s nice to see someone speak openly, even if it might piss people off. And it will ;p

11/11 Indepêndencia de Angola

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

In 1975, Angola became independent from Portugal, months after the fall of Salazar’s Estado Novo. Rather than repeat the story, read it in wikipedia. To celebrate Angola and its culture, Julia of Africa Kabisa on WMBR is having an Angolan music special on Sunday Nov 22, 4-6pm EST. Julia will interview Akwaaba founder Benjamin Lebrave between 5 and 6pm. Tune in at 88.1FM in the greater Boston area, or stream at wmbr.org, or get the direct stream link… here. Learn more about Africa Kabisa here.
