In the Fader’s own words:
“The 12th installment of the FADER/Southern Comfort 7-inch series is an upbeat one, with MNDR’s electronic fizz pop and loud and grimy kuduro straight from Angola’s Os Mais Potentes. We’ve been a fan of MNDR’s hyper energy for a long time and have long loved the releases on Akwaaba Music, so to pair two exclusive tracks from the realest dance music makers from New York and Africa, respectively, together on one 7-inch is a pretty exciting and special thing. We’ve also got some wild Egyptian-inspired artwork by Keren Richter on the cover.”
You can download both tracks for free on the Fader’s website. And if you want a copy of the vinyl, leave a comment on their page!
Yes, it’s been a slow process… we’ve held onto the remixes for months, squeezing them into our pipeline, and at last, we are happy to present to you this fantaaastic EP, which came out today exclusively on Beatport!!! We’ll post a bunch of info about the fine people who contributed to this EP, so stay tuned… meanwhile, check out this fancy little player below:

Pretty fancy…. Clark is one of the sharpest culture mags in France at the moment, and it is a pleasure, scratch that, an honor to be featured in their pages!
In their own words (somewhat adjusted by our Franco-American team!):
“First compilation dedicated to kuduro from Angola, Akwaaba Sem Transporte is a striking demonstration of the creative potential within this unclassifiable ghetto music, born in the popular neighborhoods of Luanda over 15 years ago. Intoxicating rhythms, MCs burning the mic up, a raw, rugged sound and samples cut with a machete… the 15 tracks are a concentrate of energy straight from the streets, featuring the established names in the genre (Puto Prata, Notie e Día, Zoca Zoca…) as well as the new generation.”
At last… Akwaaba unleashes a wild collection of bangers from Luanda, Angola. Some of the big names are on there, Puto Prata, Noite e Día, Zoca Zoca, but some new comers (Os Mais Potentes, Figura) and total newbies too (F4, Gelú-Six). The album is available for purchase in the iTunes store, and you can listen to it on Fairtilizer.

To balance out our kuduro release, Akwaaba Sem Transporte, here is a beautiful collection of Carlos Lamartine’s recordings, from the mid 1960s til 1975. He was a member of several bands, including Os Aguias Reais, and was backed up by some of Luanda’s best conjuntos: Os Merengues, African Show.
The album comes out August 18 on iTunes..
Derek Rath, host of Cosmic Barrio every Sunday on KPFK, invites Akwaaba founder Benjamin Lebrave to talk about his recent trip to Angola, Angolan music, African music, Akwaaba, and more of that good stuff.
