The Hood Brodz is a pair of brothers hailing from Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. Their name is a reference to the modest neighborhood they grew up in, Bairro Trevo, “where hope is low and poverty is a part of daily life: our name is a motivation for all of the neighborhood boys across the country, to dream, elevate, motivate, so that our talents rise, no matter the art form” Ayrton tells me. He and his younger brother Hélio have been at it for two years now, releasing many songs to establish their mark in the Mozambican music landscape.
Maputo is only a few hours away by road from South Africa, in particular Johannesburg and Durban, and the proximity of this house music titan shows. Although the homegrown afrohouse scene is still fragile in Mozambique, its musicality sets Maputo apart, especially in the growing afrotech scene.
“There is a lot to improve [here], sound quality, unity among artists, agencies to represent us, even how artists perform. But nothing impossible, we believe there is the potential and the will to grow” Ayrton says emphatically.
