Remember Edoheart and Sosomoneycockplease? We’ve been preparing some remixes of this tune, featuring… we can’t tell you just yet. But we decided, together with Edoheart, to add one remix by a yet to be found remixer… which could be YOU, given this is another contest!!! On this one we have to make it quick, please send your remix back no later than February 15. In case you are new to this, here is how it works:

- download the stems and the original song here.

- assemble these stems however you see fit, then send us the result of your work.

- if we like it and select it, you will be featured on the Sosomoneycockplease EP to be released this Spring. You will get a 33% revenue share for sales related to your remix.

- before you send: make sure the song is tagged. If it doesn’t say your name somewhere, it will get lost.

- you can send a link to download the track by email (no attachments please) or add it to our Soundcloud Dropbox.

- if you win, we will contact you to inform you, get original unmastered wav file, photos, bio etc.

As stated on the Kickstarter page: “Elder’s Corner is musical journey through pivotal moments in the colorful history of Nigeria as told through the lives and careers of the nations foremost music legends. It is a story about the eroding effects of colonialism, bitter ethnic clashes, politics, oil, power, money and their combined effects on a nation that recently celebrated its 50th year of self rule.”

It was only a matter of time!! We can’t believe it’s finally happening.. one of Nigeria’s top dawgs with the top dawg himself!!! Can’t pretend to be so impressed by the actual song, but that’s a different story. We’re moving the main Akwaaba office to Ghana in a few weeks, it’ll be our responsibility to raise the bar for such collaborations!!!!

Too often, when we see the words “African music” in  a major music site, they’re in the same phrase as words like vampire or weekend… not that we don’t encourage experimentation with African music and techniques. But it’s refreshing to see the Chicago powerhouse making room for the music you find in the sidewalk stands they portray in the article, which we highly, highly recommend.

Nigerian Independence Day is fast approaching. The West African nation declared independence from the United Kingdom on October 1 in 1960, and to celebrate, Akwaaba is releasing Onyenze’s latest album, Livin Dey Highlife.

The spirit of highlife’s uptempo jazz sounds are brought to life through the Ogidi, Anambra born Onyenze, who was inspired by his uncle, the legendary highlife musician, Stephen Osita Osadebe. As his protégé, Onyenze is considered by some to be the musical reincarnation of the late Osadebe, who died in 2007.

Recorded early this year, Livin Dey Highlife features 7 new tracks and marks Onyenze’s first international digital release. The album is his 8th in 9 years, and is proceeded by a number of successful and well-respected highlife releases in Nigeria.

The album will be available digitally on itunes on October 1. Until then, listen to a sneak peak on his myspace page.
