Alex Wondergem and Eli A Freee, known together as Buying Our Freedom, strike back with a beautiful video shot on location at Yamoussoukro’s Basilique Notre-Dame de la Paix. Will Niava is the man behind the camera, who also happens to be Alex’ partner in the Clove World brand.

Je m’en bats les couilles means I don’t give a fuck in French – literally it means I pound my balls about it..! As the title suggests, Alex and Eli carry with them an irreverent form of pan-Africanism, a loose criticism of the colonial baggage carried throughout the continent to this day. Yet they also celebrate the beauty and simplicity of Africa, which transcend the human mistakes of history.

It is no coincidence the video was shot in neighboring Côte d’Ivoire, a country so geographically and historically close to Ghana, yet so distant in the current formatting of the land. Je m’en bats les couilles is not a song about disrespect, rather it is about the African youth’s readiness to forgive without forgetting, to emancipate itself from the shackles of patriarchy. All this, and at the same time, always enjoying -)
